Oh, yes. They let me use fire. Silly of them.
I took my first Silver Jewelry For Beginners class at SVA – School of Visual Arts in NYC – a couple weeks ago. It was a lot of fun. I will be honest though, using the gas fed flame for soldering was a wee bit unnerving at first. But dowsing the hot metal in water had a very satisfying chshh sound.
We learned to solder using sheet solder and silver and we made a bezel and base for a ring. The next class, which is tonight, should be really, really fun, now that I am not as afeared of the flame.
