More Metal!

by Joy Masters on May 18, 2010

This ring started life as a bracelet. And then I learned you CAN over heat silver. Oopsie. After the initial horror at ruining 3 weeks of hard work*, it was kind of cool to see the silver suddenly** melt, drip, hit my leg and fall to the floor. 😀 Luckily, I was wearing a sturdy apron so I did not ruin my pants as well.

And now I have a ring. Hammered sterling, azurite-malachite stone.

* Note to self (and others taking metalwork classes): If the thought “I should ask my teacher if this is a good idea.” goes through your mind, don’t ignore it and think, “Nah, I am sure it will be fine.” Because it probably won’t be.

**By suddenly I mean after several minutes of intense flame directed at the metal. Should have seen it coming.

Ooooo so sorry about melting your 3 weeks worth of work! I love the ring – it’s lovely! Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Thank you Cindy! It was a little painful at the time. I plan on doing a bunch more cuffs and some rings in the next few weeks. I will be sure to post picutures.
